This venture has been a very long time coming for me. Virtually a 12 months ago I left my home windows down throughout a reasonably spectacular thunderstorm (unintentionally pressed the unlock button on my key in my pocket whereas I used to be walking away from the automotive and both home windows and the sunroof opened), and because of some rather drastic measures on my half to dry out the automotive the only lasting harm was that I now had a seatbelt and airbag warning light on my dashboard. I used to be fairly quickly in a position to find out that these lights have been being caused by a faulty passenger occupancy sensor. Unfortunately, BMW doesn't sell just the sensor, but fairly your complete backside seat cushion for a cool $1200. Well I didn't need to do that. So I managed to make it via many a month with these annoying warning lights till at some point I occurred upon a list on a salvage car parts site that was selling a standalone seat sensor! I snatched up the part and then spent a complete day switching them out. In researching how to get into the seats I was unable to search out much of anything useful on this forum so I figured I ought to write up this DIY to assist others out. 1. Remove the seat (duh). You may use the T50 bit to take away all 4 screws holding the seat down. As soon as unfastened, go to the trunk and disconnect the battery. Again within the cabin, push the chair again so you can see beneath and disconnect the yellow wiring harness. There's a black tab on the facet you could match a small screwdriver in. Pull that tab out as far as it is going to go, then pull out the wiring harness. There is a separate wire connector on top too: squeeze the sides to release it and disconnect that too. Now pull the seat out of the automotive. This is simpler if you also take the headrest off. 2. Now you're going to must take away the plastic cowl on the righthand facet of the seat that has the seat controls on it. This piece is held on with 5 plastic tabs: 3 are seen on the bottom of the piece and a couple of are hidden inside near the top. I used to be capable of get all but the righthand inside tab utilizing simply my arms. To get that last tab I needed to bend a hook shape into a bit of thick wire and fish that through to the tab and pull the tab whereas pulling up on the entire piece. That was difficult. As soon as the outer plastic trim is off, you'll be confronted with a second plastic piece. To remove this there's only one bolt (T30) and then you definately simply need to wiggle it round till it pops off. There are some wires connected to this piece with a plastic rivet which does not seem like it's meant to return off so I left this piece nonetheless partially hooked up to the seat. 4. Subsequent, there's one other plastic trim piece on the opposite side of the seat on the back corner. Use the T20 bit to take away the screw, and pull the piece off. 5. There's now only one final piece of trim left, and it is a pain. It is the decrease plastic piece on the front of the chair. You may see that there are three attachment factors. The outer two are simple: just depress the outward going through tab with a small screwdriver and pull outward on the piece. They're going to pop out. The center attachment level is tougher as a result of the tab you'd want to press in is actually going through inward towards the seat so you can't get to it. You'll be able to, however, use a small screwdriver and put the head contained in the attachment level, angling it so that it catches on the tab on the inside, and pull the piece downward. It'll come off ultimately. 4. Now it is time to begin removing the leather! The point of removing all this plastic trim was to be in a position to easily and fully remove the complete seat cushion. Word how all around the seat the leather-based is stitched to this plastic lip. Now that we've eliminated all the trim, you can pull this plastic lip off of its hold on the seat frame. There's one long piece for the complete front, one medium piece in the again, and two quick items, one on both back aspect of the chair. Also remember to undo the little bits on the back corners where the leather is held by a plastic button and is stretched over a metallic nub. Now we will pull the again flap by the gap in between the upper and decrease halves of the chair and then, from the again forward, pull the cushion up. There's just one last point of attachment: simply earlier than the leg extension there is a plastic rib that's attached to the seat frame. This rib is just held in by some metal tabs, you can begin on one end and pull up and it'll come out. 5. Now for the actual enjoyable half: we need to remove the leather-based from the foam cushion in order that we will get at the occupancy sensor. On the underside of the cushion, beginning from the back, you'll see many metallic hogties. I used a pair of pliers to take away them. Just pinch the ring and switch it until the ends are dealing with you, then pull them apart and remove the ring. There are four on the surface of the cushion to take away. Then on the inside you may must take away a bunch extra. I did eleven rings in complete, I think. Once you get get deep enough between the foam and the leather-based, you'll be able to fully take away the outdated sensor. It is glued in on the entrance and on both side bolsters. 6. Put in your new sensor! I glued mine again in with some Gorilla Glue Gel. Be careful because not a lot appears to stick to that foam. I in all probability went by 4-5 different glues earlier than I found the Gorilla Glue. 7. It's all downhill from right here. Now you want to reattach the leather-based to the foam. To do that, I used zip ties. Simply put them in the exact spots the place you removed the metal rings. For among the tougher parts to get a zip tie in place, I used to be able to push my steel wire by means of the outlet and use it as a guide for the zip tie. 8. Reattach that sucker again to the seat frame. Nothing too difficult right here, simply take it slow and go in the reverse from before. It's going to all fit. Don't forget to plug in your new seat sensor to the chair. 9. Reinstall the chair. Overall this mission took me about 6-8 hours. Eradicating the plastic trim is tough, removing the hog rings is a pain, and getting the leather-based reattached to the foam takes time. That said, it's all utterly doable with minimal instruments. I've written this up as greatest I can, however I am sure I left out a few steps.
